Mental Health First Aid

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is widely recognised accredited training course which teaches people how to identify and, understand and help someone who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

MHFA will teach employees to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis – and even potentially stop a crisis from happening. They’ll learn to recognise warning signs of poor mental health whilst developing the skills and confidence to approach and support someone while keeping themselves safe.

They’ll also learn the tools to help someone to access the support they might need to get better or successful manage their symptoms; including self-help books & websites, accessing mental health services through their GP, their school or place of work, through IPRS Health or other services you may have in place.

What the training contains

The Mental Health First Aid course consists of the following:

  • An in-depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing
  • Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues
  • Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress
  • Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgmental listening
  • Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix

How is the training delivered?

Our Mental Health First Aid course is delivered face-to-face over two days across four manageable sessions with learning taking place through a mix of presentations, group discussion and workshop activities.

Each session is built around a Mental Health First Aid action plan. We limit course numbers to 16 people per course so that the instructor can keep people safe and supported whilst they learn.

Takeaways

Everyone who completes the course gets:

  • A certificate of attendance to say they are a Mental Health First Aider
  • A manual to refer to whenever they need it
  • A quick reference card for the Mental Health First Aid action plan
  • A workbook including a helpful toolkit to support their own mental health
